Davao as a Digital Nomad: Mindanao's Best City for Remote Work?

Everyone talks about Cebu and Manila. Nobody talks about Davao. That's why I went — and I was surprised, positively and negatively.

Davao in 3 Sentences

Davao City is the largest city on Mindanao, the third-largest in the Philippines, and is described by many as "the safest city in the country." It's clean, organized, and has running water — which isn't a given in the Philippines. But it's also more conservative, quieter, and less international than Cebu.

Internet: Better Than Expected

This was my biggest worry. Mindanao has a reputation as an internet desert. In Davao City, that's not true:

  • PLDT Fibr (business districts, Bajada, Matina): 50-100 Mbps download, 20-30 Mbps upload
  • Globe 5G (SM Mall area, Abreeza): 40-60 Mbps, stable
  • Converge ICT (newer provider, growing fast): 70-150 Mbps, €25/month
  • Café WiFi (Yellow Hauz, Blugré Coffee): 10-20 Mbps, stable for calls

My Airbnb in Matina had PLDT Fibr at 85 Mbps — faster than my connection in Cebu. But coverage isn't city-wide. Ask about the provider before booking.

Mobile Internet

  • Globe 5G: Good in the city center, 4G with 10-20 Mbps in outer districts
  • Smart Bro: Alternative, sometimes better in rural areas outside Davao
  • Prepaid SIM with 50GB: ₱1,499 (€25)

Backup Strategy

I had PLDT Fibr as my main connection and Globe as a hotspot fallback. In 3 weeks, only 2 short outages (about 40 minutes total). Better than my experience in Siargao.

Monthly Costs in Davao

Davao is cheaper than Cebu and significantly cheaper than Manila:

  • Apartment (1BR, Matina or Bajada): ₱10,000-16,000 (€170-270)
  • Studio (near center): ₱8,000-12,000 (€135-200)
  • Food (local, carenderia): ₱60-120 (€1-2)
  • Food (mall food court): ₱120-250 (€2-4.20)
  • Food (restaurant, mid-range): ₱300-600 (€5-10)
  • Transport (taxi, Grab): ₱50-150 per ride (€0.85-2.50)
  • Transport (jeepney): ₱12-15 (€0.20-0.25)
  • Electricity (if not included): ₱2,000-3,500 (€34-59)
  • Internet (PLDT Fibr 50Mbps): ₱1,699/month (€28.50)
  • Total monthly budget: ₱38,000-55,000 (€640-920)

That's 20-30% cheaper than Cebu and 40% cheaper than BGC/Manila.

Where to Live in Davao

Matina — My Choice

Quiet, green, good internet connectivity. Many local expats. 15 minutes to the center. Less touristy, more livable. Airbnb prices: ₱800-1,500/night (€13-25).

Bajada — For Business

Business district, near SM Lanang and Abreeza Mall. If you shop a lot and like malls: here. Loud, but practical.

Poblacion — Downtown

Authentic, loud, dense. If you want city feel and want to be close to local markets. Cheapest option.

Coworking in Davao

Honestly: Davao doesn't have a real coworking ecosystem. That's the biggest drawback.

  • WeWork or similar: None of that in Davao
  • Cafés with good WiFi: Yellow Hauz (Matina), Blugré Coffee (several branches), Bo's Coffee (SM Lanang)
  • Library: The Davao City Library has free WiFi and is quiet — my insider tip

If you need a real coworking space: Davao isn't for you. If cafés work for you: there are enough with stable internet.

Safety on Mindanao

This is the question everyone asks. My experience: Davao City itself feels safer than Manila or Cebu. The city is known for strict local politics — no smoking in public, limited alcohol sales in the evening, very visible police presence.

The travel warnings for Mindanao refer to regions far east and south of Davao (Basilan, Sulu, parts of Cotabato). Davao City itself is considered safe. I walked at night, took Grab, had zero problems.

But: Check current advisories before traveling. Situations can change. The German Foreign Office often has blanket warnings for Mindanao.

What Makes Davao Unique

  • Durian: Davao is the durian capital of the Philippines. If you can handle the smell: try it.
  • Philippine Eagle Center: Massive eagles, only here. A half-day trip.
  • Samal Island: 15 minutes by ferry, white sand beaches, perfect for weekends
  • Eden Nature Park: Mountain excursion, cooler, green, perfect when you need a break from the heat
  • Coffee culture: Davao has its own coffee production. Local coffee is better and cheaper than in Manila.

Who Davao is Right For

✅ If you want to live cheaply — Davao has the best value for money ✅ If you want quiet — fewer tourists, less party, more everyday life ✅ If you want to stay 2-3 months in one place — rents are cheap long-term ✅ If you prefer Asian culture over tourist culture

Who Davao is NOT Right For

❌ If you need coworking spaces — there are none ❌ If you want a large international expat network — much smaller than Cebu ❌ If you want nightlife — Davao is quiet, bars close early ❌ If you want to be at the beach quickly — the beach is a ferry ride away (Samal)

My Verdict After 3 Weeks

Davao isn't a sexy nomad destination. It's not an Instagram place. But it's one of the most efficient cities for working I've found in the Philippines. Good internet, low costs, safe, quiet. If you want to put your head down and work for a month while saving money: Davao. If you want beach sunsets and bookings: Siargao.
