Why Siargao Works for Freelancers

Siargao occupies a weird space in the digital nomad conversation. It's not a coworking hub like Cebu. It's not a startup city like Manila. But for a freelancer who wants to earn in USD/EUR while spending in PHP, and actually enjoys the work environment, Siargao punches above its weight.

The internet is stable (50-100 Mbps in most spots). Accommodation is cheap. The community is real — you'll bump into other freelancers at the same cafes. And unlike pure tourist beaches, there's actual substance here.

The magic of Siargao is that it doesn't pretend to be something it isn't.

The Actual Numbers

Rent: ₱15,000-22,000/month for a furnished studio or 1-bedroom. Walk to the beach, not a 30-minute tricycle ride.

Internet: ₱1,500-2,500/month for decent home wifi. Mobile backup is essential (₱500-1,000 for a solid plan).

Food: If you cook: ₱8,000-10,000/month. If you eat out daily (mix of cafes and local): ₱15,000-20,000/month.

Coworking: Optional. Cloud 9 and other spots charge ₱150-300/day. But cafes work just fine.

Monthly total: ₱30,000-50,000 (~€500-800) for a comfortable life. That's freelance-scale living.

Why It Actually Works

  1. Internet is good enough — not Manila-tier, but reliable for video calls and uploads. Backup mobile hotspot solves edge cases.

  2. The community matters — you're surrounded by other freelancers. Not a party town, despite the reputation. Most people here are working.

  3. Rent is negotiable — landlords prefer longer commitments. Three months or more? You get 10-20% discounts.

  4. The environment is conducive — no traffic, no chaos, no distractions beyond intentional ones (beach, sunset).

The Honest Bit

Siargao is not for everyone. If you need 24/7 coworking infrastructure, blazing-fast internet, or professional meetups, Cebu wins. If you need startups and funding circles, Manila wins.

But if you're a freelancer who wants to work in a place that's genuinely pleasant — where your money stretches far, your internet works, and the people around you are also working — Siargao is exceptional.

The island changed a lot since the pandemic boom. But the fundamentals remain: it's still cheaper, still beautiful, and still full of people who chose to be here because the work matters more than the party.
