Why Manila's Coworking Scene Is Underrated (and Affordable)
When people think of Manila, they think traffic, noise, and chaos. They are not wrong. But what they miss is that Metro Manila has quietly built one of Southeast Asia's most sophisticated coworking ecosystems — with prices that still feel like 2020.
The startup community here is dense. Makati has become a serious tech hub. BGC (Bonifacio Global City) is where the money moves. And scattered across the metro are dozens of coworking spaces ranging from PHP 3,000-15,000 per month that beat anything you will find in Bali or Chiang Mai on both quality and ecosystem.
Manila rewards people who know where to look.
The Geography That Matters
BGC is the obvious choice: new buildings, 99.9% uptime internet, full amenities, proximity to restaurants and nightlife. Expect PHP 8,000-15,000 per month for a dedicated desk. Makati is older but cheaper — PHP 5,000-8,000 for comparable facilities. Quezon City (where most Filipino startups cluster) runs PHP 4,000-7,000 and attracts a younger, scrappier crowd.
For remote workers, the choice is simple: BGC if you want infrastructure and networking, Makati if you want balance between cost and quality, QC if you want community and energy.
Internet: The Real Story
Metro Manila has some of the most reliable internet in the region. PLDT and Converge fiber penetration is exceptional. Most coworking spaces advertise 100 Mbps guaranteed. In practice, speeds during peak hours remain stable — not always the case elsewhere in Southeast Asia.
Mobile backup is essential (Smart or Globe 5G), but for serious remote work, Manila's infrastructure is genuinely dependable. This matters more than most people admit.
Food and Cost of Living
A full Filipino breakfast: PHP 80-150. Lunch at a carindaría: PHP 120-200. Dinner at a mid-range restaurant in BGC: PHP 400-700 per person. Groceries from Puregold or Robinsons: remarkably cheap. A full week of groceries for one person: PHP 1,500-2,500.
Monthly budget for a digital nomad eating out daily at mixed venues: PHP 12,000-16,000. Add coworking (PHP 8,000), accommodation (PHP 15,000-25,000 for a decent 1-bedroom in BGC or Makati), utilities (PHP 2,000), phone and internet (PHP 2,500), transport (PHP 3,000-5,000 with Grab).
Total for a comfortable life in Manila proper: PHP 42,000-56,000 per month.
Why Remote Workers Stay
Manila works for remote workers who value professional infrastructure and community over beaches and island vibes. The startup ecosystem is real — you will meet founders, investors, and other remote professionals who actually want to work. The coworking spaces host regular networking events. The food scene is exceptional. The metro never sleeps.
The traffic is real. The pollution is real. The noise on a Friday night is real. But for someone who thrives in a high-energy, professional environment, Manila is genuinely underrated as a digital nomad base.
The Philippines has many faces. Manila's startup face is one of them.
