Why Siargao's Diving Scene Is Underrated
Most people think Palawan when they think Philippines diving. They're missing that Siargao has quietly built one of Southeast Asia's best diving ecosystems — with prices that beat Bali and Phuket by half.
The reef system around Siargao is healthy. The water is warm year-round (26-29°C). The dive operators are professional and affordable. And the diving community here is tight — you'll meet instructors, dive masters, and serious underwater photographers from across the world.
A single dive with a licensed operator: ₱1,200-1,800. A PADI open water certification course: ₱12,000-15,000 (vs ₱28,000+ in tourist hotspots). Accommodation for divers: ₱400-800/night for decent rooms with diving access.
The Dive Sites
Cloud 9 Reef — The signature site. 12-18m depth, soft coral gardens, occasional reef sharks, constant visibility. A 20-minute boat ride from the main beach.
Barracuda Point — Deeper (25-30m), more technical. Strong currents, big fish. For advanced divers only.
Southern Siargao Reefs — Shallower, more beginner-friendly. Turtle sightings are common.
Magpie Island — Macro diving. Nudibranchs, seahorses, tiny creatures. 10-12m depth, calm water.
Most dives depart between 8am and 2pm. A typical dive trip is 3-4 hours total.
The Diving Community
Unlike Palawan (which feels transactional), Siargao's diving community is collaborative. Dive shops here run regular group dives, weekend trips, and training courses. You'll meet people staying for weeks or months, not just tourists checking a box.
Dive operators include Ocean Quest, Blue Reef, and several smaller shops run by long-term residents. Ask around — the best operators aren't always in the guidebooks.
Certification & Training
If you're coming to learn, Siargao is the place. A PADI Open Water certification takes 3-4 days and costs ₱12,000-15,000. You're certified for life afterward and can dive anywhere in the world.
Specialties (Advanced Open Water, Deep Diving, Nitrox) are also available. Many divers use Siargao as their training base before exploring Indonesia or Southeast Asia's other dive destinations.
The Real Cost Breakdown (Monthly)
Accommodation: ₱8,000-15,000 (beach-close room with good internet) Food: ₱8,000-12,000 (mix of local + international) Diving: ₱3,000-5,000/month if doing 2-3 dives weekly Transport & misc: ₱2,000-3,000
Total: ₱21,000-35,000/month — cheaper than most Southeast Asian dive destinations.
When to Dive
Best season: March–June (dry season, excellent visibility, 25-30m average) Still good: July–November (occasional rain, 15-20m visibility, less crowded) Avoid: December–February (monsoon season, rough seas, low visibility)
Not Just Diving
Siargao is also known for world-class surfing, great food, and a relaxed pace. If you dive 3 days a week, you've got plenty of time to explore. The island is small — everything is accessible by tricycle.
One More Thing
Siargao's diving infrastructure is growing fast. New operators are opening, old ones are improving. Word-of-mouth matters here. Once you arrive, spend a day talking to other divers and getting recommendations. The best shop for you might be a small outfit run by someone who's been diving here for 5+ years.
The Philippines has some of the world's best diving. Siargao is where the smart divers go.
